BURNHAM BEECHES Sunday 15th September 2013

Sam Penn

Leisurely leaving time of 8am meant I could get the yard mucked out and organised before taking Northern Territory and Wesley to Burnham Beeches Unaffiliated one day event - these events are fantastic as the competition is held at a BE venue, with BE courses and organiser’s , with the added bonus of prize money!

With the weather forecast threatening hurricanes, howling gales and torrential rain I have to admit I was very happy to leave the yard in bright sunshine and clear skies! The event is a couple of hours drive away and Sarah (Wesley’s owner) had offered to come and groom, a lorry journey is always the perfect time to catch up, throw some ideas around, eat chocolate and plan things for the future.

Nt was first to go and did a slightly over exuberant dressage test to score 38.5, I know he can do better than this so not worried, I think he realised he was at a PARTY and just found life very exciting, once he has been to a few more events I am sure he will settle and we will see some better dressage marks coming through. NT then had a quick change of tack to go onto his jumping phases.

The Intro cross country course was a good educational course, built with enough questions, things for a horse to look at and also to gain confidence on the way round. I was very happy with NT – he jumped a double clear inside the time to finish just outside the placing’s. A very good experience for NT and he felt like he was getting the idea of what eventing is about.

Wesley was the star of the day, by the time it was his turn to shine, the sun had disappeared, the hurricane winds had hit and it was pouring with rain, not ideal eventing conditions!

A lovely dressage test to score 24, a very unlucky fence down show jumping and a clear inside the time gave Wesley a win in the pre-novice!

Parked next to us was Rosie Bloor and the gorgeous grey Colin, Rosie has kept Colin with me for the best part of this season and it was there second one day event together, competing in the 80(T) they did a lovely dressage test, had one down show jumping and had a very enjoyable clear round cross country to put them into 9th place.

A fantastic, if somewhat wet day was had by all – the two stallions behaved impeccably and both horses have gone home having had an educational run.

Next stop is unaffiliated dressage on Wednesday with the just backed Darco, followed by Munstead horse trials at the weekend.

In the meantime I am packing and sorting everything out ready for the move in two week’s time!!!
