Berkshire College 16th June

Sam Penn

Sam on NT at BCA 2013

Chuffed to bits, we travelled to Berkshire College with Northern Territory, NT for short. NT is a fabulous four year old stallion (though you wouldnt know it as he is so superbly well behaved) owned by 'The Poppinghole Racing Syndicate'. NT has been with me for approximately four months having raced 11 times on the flat. I went back to basics with him, he could canter in a straight line (fast) but wasn't so co-ordinated when being asked to canter, slowly a 20metre circle on the right rein. Going to his first event was a big step and he handled it brilliantly, quite excited to be at his first proper party and slightly unsure of the 'studding up procedure' but once on board he settled well.

Dressage he finds hard at the moment, the dressage arena is much shorter than the racetrack, and doing funny circles on grass will take some getting used to, especially when the horse in the next door arena is cantering down the long side at the same time as him.......is it a race???? He did a polite and accurate test to get 32.5 penalties including getting a couple of 8's. Showjumping I was pleased with, it was NT's first time jumping on grass at a show and was pleased with his attitude, we had an unfortunate fence down but I was very pleased as he showed good co-ordination and balance. Having been Cross country schooled a handful of times and always being 'up for the job' he came out the start box like a pro! Felt like he hd been going cross country for years and gave me a really enjoyable ride round our first BE90 together.

Great day and very happy with NT - looking forward to our future together and very happy with our 4th place rossette. Tweseldown is next on the agenda.*
